Chapter 12

Prince Maximus and Princess Alba accompanied me to a study with leather sofas large enough to swallow us both. The ceilings of this room were lower than the ballroom, giving it a cozy feel. Wooly-haired ogresses in black dresses and white aprons served some kind of sweet alcoholic spirit. Prince Maximus and I declined, and we sat in front of the Prince Regent and the red-haired witch.

Standing next to their sofa was an elderly ogre clad in white-and-gold robes with massive, triangular horns on each side of his head. For such scary people, they were actually quite nice, and let me have a calming elixir before I told them everything that happened to me from the day I turned sixteen.

Throughout my tale, Prince Maximus added more extra information about Queen Amia’s pregnancy and the reports the palace received on the maleficore’s attacks, but his words were formal and stilted, as though he was holding back a well of anger. Despite the artificial calm, I couldn’t help but think I had disappointed him somehow with my conduct.

Something about the unusual trio told me that they had encountered a maleficore before, or at least some other powerful being with the ability to steal magic. Neither of them particularly liked fairies, which I found peculiar, considering the Prince Regent had married at least two fairies. I didn’t dare comment on this, as the questions became more specific, and it was clear that they were worried about someone coming to attack the quadruplets.

“Thank you, Cadet Longhorn,” said the red-haired woman, who I discovered was the Witch General of the Magical Militia. “It has been most enlightening.”

The old ogre, who everyone referred to as the Magistratus, turned to the Witch General. “Can you make enquiries and find out how many the creature has attacked?”

Her lips tightened. “If that thing has left her alive, I’ll infuse the magic back into her myself.”

Prince Maximus stood. “May we leave?”

The Prince Regent nodded. “All except Alba.”

Princess Alba’s shoulders slumped, but she turned to me with a tired smile. “See you later.”

Prince Maximus offered me his hand, lightening the tightness of my chest. Maybe he wouldn’t blame me for what I had done to his stepmother.

“Did he see the maleficore?” asked Tigris’ sleepy voice.

“Yes.”

“Then I doubt the prince will consider it his mother.”

I waited for the dragon to say something else, but he remained silent. Taking Prince Maximus’ hand, I let him help me out of my seat. All these years with Gordo had got me thinking everything was my fault. He was in jail and I was in another country training to become a dragon rider. The time for blaming myself for the actions of others was over.

Niger waited outside the door with an eight-foot-tall butler from before at his side. He said something about waiting for Princess Alba, so we bade him good night and walked through the empty, marble hallway. Our footsteps, instead of the strains of the orchestra, were the only sound accompanying our exit, and I guessed that the appearance of the maleficore had ruined the mood.
